4 Month Stats!

Chase had his 4-month doctor's appointment today and he now weighs 16lbs 1oz (75th percentile) and is 25 1/2" long (75th percentile). He's a big boy!!

The doctor said he was ready for cereal so we're excited to try that out tonight... a new adventure!

He also got more shots which, of course, he screamed about... but Brian said as soon as he picked him up he stopped screaming and gave him a big smile so I don't think it scarred him for life (phew!).

While he was there Brian talked to the doctor about the fact that Chase won’t sleep without being wrapped/swaddled at night (click here to see what I'm talking about) and she confirmed what we already knew but were trying to deny: he’s too old to be wrapped anymore. So I have a feeling we’re going to have a LOT of sleepless nights ahead of us while he gets used to not being wrapped up all “snug as a bug in a rug” at bedtime. Wish us luck (we are dreading it)!

I'm sure you will do just fine. Did she give you any tips for the transition?

He's almost as big as Isaac! Awesome!

Ah - poor lil Chase likes to be cozy huh? Have you tried white noise? Perhaps loosen his swaddle a little more night by night after he goes to sleep...until you don't need it?

I know Isaac likes to sleep with a receiving blanket over his head. I know that sounds nuts, but he does! I just drape it lightly over his head and it's light enough he can knock it off if he wants to. Puts him right to sleep.

Good luck!

Well, Holly, our advice from the doctor was to let him cry for 20-30 minutes at a time and if that doesn't work give him Tylenol! So it's torture or drugs, I guess. ;)

The letting him cry part is going to be sooooooo haaaaaard....

As for your slowly loosening the wrap idea, Becky, it sounds brilliant in theory but if we wrap him any looser than we do he wriggles out of it anyway so we're just going to go cold turkey and pray we make it through the night.

The picture of Isaac sleeping with a receiving blanket over his head is HILARIOUS!

Noel's friend Mailey liked to sleep with a burp cloth over her face. But I think it was because she sticks her tongue out and sucks on it and she didn't want anyone to see her doing it cuz it looks a little strange. But Noel just has to have her little blankie with the ribbons on it. She plays with the ribbons and snuggles the blankie and falls to sleep. In the end, I'm sure Chase will figure something out for himself and it will all work out. All his pictures look so cute and happy, I'm sure he'll be no trouble at all. Let me know how it went last night.

Well Chase did OK last night. We struggled until about 2:30am. He slept for about 40 minutes and then woke up and screamed for 20, then went back to sleep for 40, screamed for 10, back to sleep for 40, screamed for 5, and then finally he slept for 4 hours straight til his normal wake-up time. So at least the crying bouts got less and less as we went along. That was soooooooooooooo hard for me to sit through. Pure torture. But he survived and hopefully it will keep getting a easier and easier.

Thanks for the support and encouragement, you guys!

Night 2 update (for those who are interested): only struggled for about an hour and a half when we first put him down (which was down by 3 hours from the night before). Struggled a little again at 4:30 but for the most part the night was better than the 1st....

Yay! Don't get frustrated. He'll figure it out.

Update: You know, we don't give babies enough credit. They really are quite adaptable. One week after the first exhausting night of crying he's a pro already... goes to bed in his PJ's every night like a champ! Holly, I give him the ribboned blanket you made for us and it really helps (he likes to suck on it). So thanks so much for make us a magic blankie! ;)
